As I type this, my wife is driving and we’re headed to Alabama from our home in Northern Indiana. It’s an annual ritual that I explained to some of my church friends is a combination of a business meeting, worship gathering, family reunion, and trade show. I’ve been attending the SBC Annual Meeting since 1999 and make it a point to actively participate as a messenger each year. A couple thoughts have been running through my mind over the last couple weeks that I wanted to share as we come together in Alabama this week. 1. What we are doing is … [Read more...] about The SBC Annual Meeting – Putting it in perspective

#SBC19: Excellent Choices in Officer Elections (1 & 2 VP)
The leadup to #SBC19 hasn't focused much on officer elections. For the three roles of conventions president, first- and second vices presidents, only one nominee for each office has been announced to this point. J. D. Greear will, in all likelihood, be elected without opposition to serve a second year as SBC President. While many of us wished he had been elected back in 2016, it now seems providential that Greear was able to provide leadership for what the convention has faced over the past year and a half. Today's release of Caring Well: A Report from the SBC Sexual Abuse Advisory Group is … [Read more...] about #SBC19: Excellent Choices in Officer Elections (1 & 2 VP)
Birmingham Bound #SBC19
I. I seriously internally and externally debated about attending SBC ’19 Birmingham because SBC entities repeatedly refuse to hire minorities as president of one of the entities, even when they are highly qualified. There have been five entity head vacancies in the SBC over the past 18 months. Four of the five have been filled. No minorities have been hired to date. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. II. The ten entity heads of the SBC assemble at least biannually, in a meeting known as the Great Commission Council. In a Convention comprised of 20% minorities—Asians, African … [Read more...] about Birmingham Bound #SBC19
BCHS: Maybe the SBC’s Best-Kept-Secret… Seriously!
I promise this will be the last thing I post regarding anything about New Orleans for the foreseeable future. I’m sure those of you who are in the unfortunate circumstance of not living here might get tired of all the doting and mushiness and PDA. ;) I just want to point out an amazing ministry we have here which I believe ought to be replicated across the convention. The news itself about Baptist Community Heath Services (BCHS) is impressive but the ministry happening there is the most important thing going on. This recent report to BCHS partners speaks for itself, but please, if you … [Read more...] about BCHS: Maybe the SBC’s Best-Kept-Secret… Seriously!

Why Do They Hate Us? A (Totally and Completely Serious) Plea on Behalf of Corpulent Baptists (Really!)
As I write this (Monday May 13) I am wearing a nifty "Send Relief" t-shirt - for the first time. When I received it, the largest size they had was 2xl and I was 3xl and in some shirts even bigger. I am now able to wear the 2xl. You guys know me. I"m all about the group hugs and never want to be critical. "If you can't say something nice" Dave. But something happened to me last year at the Annual Meeting that must be addressed - an issue of discrimination against Corpulent Baptists. When I go to the Annual Meeting, I'm all about the free stuff at the display area. One year, I decided to … [Read more...] about Why Do They Hate Us? SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In
One year ago today Alan Cross and I announced the launch of the SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative. I wanted to celebrate the progress we’ve made this year and update our readers on some of what we’ve seen. The LDI was designed as a networking tool for us to be able to discover and identify Southern Baptists for potential leadership roles who we might otherwise be unaware of, particularly ethnic minorities, women, and lay persons. We want to open the floodgates and remove as many barriers as possible to achieve our goal: A convention where ethnic minority leaders and members, as well as … [Read more...] about SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In
Recording Secretary and the Executive Committee
There really is no good time for writing an article like this. It always runs the risk of having motives assigned to it that I assure you do not exist. I started writing this article after last year's convention, but I never finished or published it. I pulled it back out and edited it some more several months ago, but I still did not publish it. I am publishing it now because I still agree with what I have written here, and while it's a relatively minor thing, it is something I think should be considered. Please do not interpret this article as a slight against the current recording … [Read more...] about Recording Secretary and the Executive Committee
Five Questions I Respectfully Ask Five Southern Baptist Convention Entities To Answer
Five Entities: Southern Baptist Executive Committee (EC), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS), International Mission Board (IMB), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS), and Lifeway. There are five questions that I plan to forward to five SBC entities (listed above), who have hired, or will be hiring a President for each entity, in the months ahead. If I get actual, specific answers to these questions in writing before the Annual Session of the Southern Baptist Convention in Birmingham, in June, I will not find it necessary to ask these questions during each of these … [Read more...] about Five Questions I Respectfully Ask Five Southern Baptist Convention Entities To Answer
To Attend, or Not Attend, That Is the Question
I enjoy attending the Annual Session of the Southern Baptist Convention each year. Our annual Vacation Bible School and the second week of June SBC session have often conflicted on our church calendar. I have usually opted to attend the SBC, when that occurs, and left an Associate in charge. This year we scheduled the VBS for the last week of June, to make sure it didn’t conflict with the SBC and/or the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education meeting in Baltimore. However, as of today, I’m seriously contemplating whether or not to attend the SBC Birmingham, 2019. Why? To be … [Read more...] about To Attend, or Not Attend, That Is the Question
