In my recent read through 1 Kings 21, in preparation to preach this coming Lord’s Day, I decided to get a better understanding on (evil) King Ahab’s condition. The last verse of chapter 20 says he “went to his house sullen and vexed.” In 1 Kings 21:4 he went “into his house sullen and vexed” again, for a second time. in 1 Kings 21:5 he was “so sullen” that he was not eating. Then in 1 Kings 21:27 he was described as being “despondent”. Those are very descriptive words. They represent a condition of ones countenance. What brings on this kind of condition that one is described as … [Read more...] about Am I Coveting? (Paul Thompson)

Is it time to reconsider church-sponsored Super Bowl fellowships?
I was in fifth grade when I first witnessed a tragic football accident. I remember seeing a boy lying motionless on the 50-yard line, surrounded by the coaches, his parents, and eventually paramedics, who would carry him off on a stretcher. He would live, but for now he was lifeless. The boy had collided with another kid and hadn’t moved since the accident. The event is something that I have never forgotten. I personally played football until eighth grade but quit in high school because of how much bigger, faster and stronger everyone was than me. I’m competitive like that. At the time I felt … [Read more...] about Is it time to reconsider church-sponsored Super Bowl fellowships?
Time to try out the new paradigm for an SBC presidential election?
I would like to see a serious effort by Southern Baptists to elect someone other than a megachurch pastor as president of the convention. While I have no particular complaint about current president Ronnie Floyd, I think he has done a good job, my view is that we lose something valuable by relying on a parade of pastors whose environment is that of the two hundred or so megachurches in the SBC. There are no job demands, no responsibilities, no tasks of the president of the SBC that qualify only megachurch pastors for election. Although the SBC president has to have some level of visibility, … [Read more...] about Time to try out the new paradigm for an SBC presidential election?
The Trinity’s Work in Inspiration
I'm a fairly poor multi-tasker. The only set of skills that provide me with multi-tasking abilities are culinary in nature. I can bake whole wheat bread while brushing the potato croquets with butter topping and stuffing the almond-crusted chicken breasts before dipping the strawberries in chocolate, and have it all ready at the exact moment I finish hand-washing all the dishes. The only kitchen task I cannot perform simultaneously with anything else involves pouring a glass of water from our filtered water dispenser. I've emptied that 5 gallon bottle more times than I can recall, and … [Read more...] about The Trinity’s Work in Inspiration
Speaking of President…What about St. Louis and the SBC?
I've been asked several times, "Do you hear any scuttlebutt about who is going to run for president of the SBC in St. Louis?" The answer is, "No," - and yes. I've heard nothing specific, nothing firm, nothing absolute. But I have heard one rumor, since way back even before the last convention. Here is what I've been hearing. There is an SBC entity head seriously considering a run for SBC President. The people that have spoken to me have been non-specific, and have not named the name of the entity head. I have a strong guess who it probably is, if the rumor is true. (I have to tell you, … [Read more...] about Speaking of President…What about St. Louis and the SBC?
Donald Trump IS Barack Obama
Originally posted at "Dave Miller Daily." There are a lot of words you could use to describe Donald Trump. Narcissist - his focus and concern isn't America, it's all about Donald Trump. He judges people, press, and everyone by "how they treat me." "It's all about ME," according to Trump. Misogynist - his treatment of women is despicable. No more need be said. Racist – it is not too much of a stretch to use this word to describe his border policy and his treatment of Muslims. Bully - he is mean-spirited, vindictive, and nasty. Bizarre – he says and does some of the most … [Read more...] about Donald Trump IS Barack Obama
There Are Some Things I Just Don’t Get – Bill MacKinnon
I like to dialog with people, either personally or online, as long as things don’t get ugly. I’m not good with real conflict. I will happily stake out a position and defend it. Sometimes I’m good at it, sometimes I’m not. If you’re like me, sometimes you just throw something out there and realize that you don’t have the tools or knowledge to defend it well. In that case I do a little more research to see if my case is stronger than I think, or perhaps I need to rethink my position. But one thing I always try to do now, and I’m getting better at it, is to see the other side. I no longer … [Read more...] about There Are Some Things I Just Don’t Get – Bill MacKinnon
A Moment of Clarity: Idolatry and American Christianity
This was originally published at my new blogging venture, "Dave Miller Daily." Don't get your hopes up, I'm not planning to leave SBC Voices anytime soon. But I plan to write about broader interests - sports, politics, and other things, at that site, limiting my entries here more to the things that deal with the SBC. I will also, from time to time, double post, as I'm doing now. I had a moment of clarity in the villages west of Ziguinchor, Senegal a couple of weeks ago, one that helped me to understand the problems in American Christianity. For most of our history Americans have described … [Read more...] about A Moment of Clarity: Idolatry and American Christianity
Barnabas, in Search of Saul of Tarsus: Looking for a Missions Partner
A year ago I went for the first time to Senegal with Bart, to start working with the Unengaged, Unreached People Group (UUPG) known as the Essing. They are cousins to the people group Bart has been working with, the Bayot. He and his church are doing an amazing work west of Zinguinchor among the Bayot – after about four years things are coming together beautifully and they are beginning to see real fruit from their work. At some point they uncovered the existence of this group, the Essing, who live just a few kilometers away on the next peninsula along the Casamance. Bart mentioned on a blog … [Read more...] about Barnabas, in Search of Saul of Tarsus: Looking for a Missions Partner
First World Problems (by Andy Addis)
Andy Addis is lead pastor of Crosspoint Church in Hutchinson, KS. I am attending a meeting this week in Atlanta… well, at least, I hope I am. Right now I am sitting in Dallas, stranded with about 300 of my newest friends at the airport. We should have been to Atlanta about…. wait for it… one minute ago, but here we sit in the Lone Star state. It started with the captain saying they couldn’t close the forward cargo door, and they were sending for a mechanic. I heard a joke a few rows up, something about getting a bigger hammer. A nearby gaggle of passengers laughed. But, the … [Read more...] about First World Problems (by Andy Addis)
