...that he is the wittiest person in the SBC. To wit: He also relayed a bit of humor amid the ordeal: May 1: "Had a Christian nurse, a mainline Christian nurse and a Syrian doctor. It was an interesting conversation." May 1: "Going home [after the biopsy]. Trying to convince Jenni the doctor ordered stop at Mr Stirfry but she ain't buying it." May 3: "The hospital turned down my request to live-tweet the surgery today. Some nonsense about general anesthesia making that a bad choice." May 4: "Based on the pain I am experiencing, I have made the decision to never have my spleen and … [Read more...] about Someone must say about the avuncular Dave Miller…

Coming to #T4G18?
A few of the contributors to this blog are headed to T4G this week. I also know that some of our commenters are headed that way as well. Maybe there are more that I don't know about. Well, consider this your invitation to join us for dinner on Thursday night. We'll talk T4G, SBC, and any other acronym you can come up with. Dave Miller won't be holding court as he does at the SBC, but it should be a good time. We will be eating at Doc Crow's Southern Smokehouse. We're going to have a delicious meal, and we'll make SBC Today pay for it. That or we will put it on Dave Miller's credit … [Read more...] about Coming to #T4G18?

We've been talking about it for a while now, and finally over the past week we've been rolling out an update to the website. We hope you'll enjoy the new look and features. The visual changes may be the first thing you notice, but we hope you'll see some improvements in other areas too, particularly with our comments section. Here are some of the details: New SBC Voices logo & artwork across the blog and social media. SBC Voices is turning 9 years old — here are the top 20 posts (sorted by comment count)
SBC Voices traces it's humble beginnings back to a blogger site in June 2007. We moved to the current address in 2008. Times have changed, technology has improved, but we're still here talking about all things Southern Baptist. The stats dashboard says we've had something like 6.5 million page views (not counting blog authors). We've released 3,727 posts and they have earned 168,598 comments (not counting spam). That's an average of 45 comments per post over the last 9 years. There aren't many blog communities with that kind of activity -- all credit to the readers who keep things … [Read more...] about SBC Voices is turning 9 years old — here are the top 20 posts (sorted by comment count)
How to get your face beside your comments…
This is a short PSA for anyone who would like to display a profile picture beside your comments. SBC Voices, like many Wordpress blogs, use the free Gravatar service. It basically connects a mugshot to your email, so when you comment on a blog people can judge you by your photo. It's a good idea and will make everyone a little more civil. Click the link above. … [Read more...] about How to get your face beside your comments…
I’m Relieved
I happen to know that Dave is back home in Iowa at this very moment as I am composing this post because I saw it on Facebook. I for one am glad to see him back in the states and ready (I hope) to resume his regular place as editor in chief of our crazy corner of the blogosphere. It is a relief to be close to being relieved of duty once again. I frankly don't know how Dave manages to do all that he does for this blog on a daily and weekly basis. I imagine that I will wander around in the background once again trying to remain inconspicuous and occasionally cleaning out the spam comments … [Read more...] about I’m Relieved
The Deputy Ain’t Perfect
I know that this goes without saying, but I am not perfect. In trying to keep up with three posts a day as Dave prefers, I published a post earlier that some have questioned. It was from one of our contributors who usually writes thoughtful posts about issues that I think are important to address. I didn't read the post fully before scheduling it. After it went live, I received some feedback regarding the nature of the post and whether this blog was the place for it to be given a voice. We work hard not to censor our contributors here, but the writer wishes to withdraw the post rather … [Read more...] about The Deputy Ain’t Perfect
Practice Praise When Possible
When we moved to the Black Hills as Mission Service Corps(MSC) Missionaries back in 2003, I managed to find a job at a local call center in Rapid City as a way to help make ends meet. It was an inbound customer service center affiliated with GE and I started out in the department that took service calls from people who had appliances under service contracts or warranties. I won't bore you with the details, but those who have spent any time whatsoever in customer service of any kind, know that people generally only call such a place to complain about things. It is a service line you might … [Read more...] about Practice Praise When Possible
The Inside Scoop on SBCVoices
It's a busy season for many of us that post around here, and so we're running on a "write-it, post-it" schedule rather than a "write-it, let-it sit and be scheduled, then post-it" kind of schedule. Well, except for one person that's not me, who has lots of posts in the queue. However, since we're a little short on content this week (How do I know we're short? When you see more than 1 Doug post in any 7-day time frame, we're short on good content), I thought I'd peel back the curtain with a few lesser-known facts about SBCVoices and the contributors here: Little known fact #1: There is … [Read more...] about The Inside Scoop on SBCVoices
