Baptist in the Spirit, Part 1: One Thing Changed!

August 28, 2017 by Dave Miller

As much as I love humor, I generally avoid any kind of joke involving the Divine. God’s glory inspires many emotions, but amusement does not seem to be an appropriate one. However, there is a corny old joke that makes a valuable point. A man was trapped in a flood on top of a barn. He prayed, calling out to God and a voice came from heaven saying, “I will save you, my son.” With that confidence, he relaxed on the roof and awaited his rescue. Soon, a man in a canoe came by and told him there was room in the front. The man said no because he was waiting for God to save him. As the waters … [Read more...] about Baptist in the Spirit, Part 1: One Thing Changed!

Blinded

August 26, 2017 by Bart Barber

"I KNEW it!" she crowed, as if she had found a discarded scrap of paper containing coded instructions from LBJ to Lee Harvey Oswald. She was, by all appearances, a lovely lady. Tall and slender, dressed beautifully, with a meticulously groomed head of white hair framing a face befitting that woman in your home town who retired from a successful career and then quickly segued into the presidency of the local library board, she sat in the shade on a park bench in the Ahuntsic neighborhood of Montreal, talking with a team of our volunteers. What nefarious plot had she uncovered? What deep … [Read more...] about Blinded

False Criticisms of Large Churches

August 25, 2017 by toddbenkert

I attend a smaller SBC church. Up until recently, I was pastoring a smaller membership church. Throughout my time in ministry, though, I’ve found myself being an apologist for the large churches in the areas where I serve. In Northwest Indiana, where I live now, there are a number of large, bible-believing, gospel-preaching churches of different denominations that are healthy and impacting the community in various ways. Most of them, too, are “kingdom” minded and there is a great unity among the evangelical community here. Still, my ministry has been in small churches and to members of small … [Read more...] about False Criticisms of Large Churches

Baptist associations and the struggle with irrelevance

August 25, 2017 by William Thornton

Did you read the Baptist Press story on the survey of local Baptist associations?  Survey Weighs Value of Baptist Associations. Perhaps the most salient quote coming out of this recent study might be this one, "When asked to describe the most exciting aspect of their local Baptist association, the most popular answer among church leaders was 'nothing,'" said Jason Lowe, a Kentucky director of missions who led the study that looked into attitudes about the work of local Baptist associations. "Nothing." How's that for a succinct evaluation of the work of our most historic cooperative … [Read more...] about Baptist associations and the struggle with irrelevance

Biblical Justice Demands Evangelicals/Southern Baptists to Speak on Behalf of Immigrant Dreamers

August 24, 2017 by Alan Cross

Once again, I heard disturbing news today. Immigrant Dreamers (those brought here illegally as children who have previously had certain protections under the DACA program) are going to lose their protections in the near future and become susceptible to deportation. But, even more than that, I've heard directly from the offices of Republican Senators and Congressmen who are asking Evangelical pastors and churches to speak up on behalf of Dreamers and help give them the moral backing to pass legislation to protect these young people. They want to do what is right, but they need support from the … [Read more...] about Biblical Justice Demands Evangelicals/Southern Baptists to Speak on Behalf of Immigrant Dreamers

Why I Devote Little Time to “Calling Out” Left Wing People and Groups

August 23, 2017 by Dave Miller

I hear it all the time. During the election, when I expressed my angst or my disgust about the actions of my former political party, the GOP (technically, due to laziness, I haven't taken the time to officially change my registration), I would immediately and consistently be met with a chorus of, "but what about Hillary?" responses. I was asked why I didn't confront her and condemn her more regularly. That has continued in several different forms but has come to a head recently in the Alt-right, KKK, White supremacist issues that have arisen in our land, especially the one that happened in … [Read more...] about Why I Devote Little Time to “Calling Out” Left Wing People and Groups

Eclipse report from William “Totality” Thornton

August 22, 2017 by William Thornton

I'm about 45 minutes from the edge of totality so I had a strategy for prime viewing. Rather than get mixed up in a million or so of America's worst and most aggressive drivers, the metro Atlanta crowd, I took some familiar secondary roads to make a push deep into the totality zone, at least deep enough to get two or more minutes viewing of totality. This is serious business and one shouldn't be too casual about the natural event of a lifetime. My support staff included my wonderful wife and daughter - who understood that this was likely to be similar to airline flights we have taken over … [Read more...] about Eclipse report from William “Totality” Thornton

Take-Aways from “A Kingdom Conversation on Race…”

August 21, 2017 by toddbenkert

Last night in Arlington, TX, Cornerstone Baptist Church hosted a joint worship service with churches of various races/ethnicities in the region and featuring local and national leaders in “A Kingdom Conversation on Race and the Alt-Right.” The service was quickly put together in response to the events in Charlottesville the week before. Serveral influential churches in the area met to worship together. For the second half of the event, Dr. McKissic assembled an array of leaders in a panel to address questions on issues of race, racial reconciliation and unity, and how to respond to the newly … [Read more...] about Take-Aways from “A Kingdom Conversation on Race…”

A Kingdom Conversation on Race and the Alt-Right (and You’re invited!)

August 18, 2017 by toddbenkert

It’s no secret that Dr. Wm Dwight McKissic is a friend to this blog and to several of us personally here at SBCVoices. The reason for that, I believe, is that we have seen his consistent heart and passion for unity among the people of God and we share that heart. I appreciate my brother more than he knows and thank God for him. Many motives have been ascribed to Dr. McKissic as he has pushed southern Baptists to consider issues surrounding racial unity and reconciliation. The overriding motive I’ve seen from him is a desire for true fellowship and unity in the body of Christ – a desire for us … [Read more...] about A Kingdom Conversation on Race and the Alt-Right (and You’re invited!)

Confederate Monument Mayhem

August 18, 2017 by William Thornton

In the early 21st Century a paroxysm of rage and indignation arose against the symbols and statues of the Confederacy that was expressed by the defacing of graves, widespread destruction and vandalism of Confederate monuments on both public and private property, in parks, on battlefields and even in museums. The time came to be known as The Great Confederate Cleansing. The movement is generally considered to have fueled the growth of more radical hate groups and to have lowered the tone of racial discussion. Highly unlikely, one speculates, that this would be an accurate description of future … [Read more...] about Confederate Monument Mayhem
