Some Sports Questions to Ponder

November 10, 2012 by Dave Miller

How did we survive before ESPN? Is a lack of integrity part of the job application for USC football coaches? Isn't college football a prime example of the lament of the prophets, "Why do the evil prosper?" Does the success of an inferior Notre Dame team tempt one to believe in the existence of luck? Is it possible that Missouri wishes it has not joined the SEC? Does anyone miss the NHL? Do you ever wonder just how corrupt college sports really are? (especially football) Were we stupid to cheer for Lance Armstrong? Do they send sports announcers to "How to Say Moronic … [Read more...] about Some Sports Questions to Ponder

Did God Choose Barack Obama as President?

November 8, 2012 by Dave Miller

Habakkuk was confused, frustrated, and evidently just a little bit ticked at God. "Oh, Lord, how long shall I cry for help and you will not hear? Or cry to you 'Violence" and you will not save?"  (Hab 1:2) His concern was focused on the wickedness that was so prevalent among God's people, in his nation. "So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted." (Hab 1:4) Read between the lines. "Where are you, God? Why are you allowing this wickedness to prevail?" Then, God answered Habakkuk, but it was not an … [Read more...] about Did God Choose Barack Obama as President?

A Confused Day

November 8, 2012 by Doug Hibbard

I got up this morning, went to Wal-Mart to buy groceries, came back to the farm to shoot a barrel (it received a fair trial), and then came on into the church office. I picked up my watch off the bookshelf, put it on and went on with my day. Now, it's Wednesday, so time matters because of the traditional church schedule. I found myself a little confused though, throughout the day as something was not right with keeping up with what time it was. I would check my phone, see the time, think accordingly, and go on. Later, I would look at my watch, be puzzled, and then go forward because of what … [Read more...] about A Confused Day

Church History: How Christians Settled an Argument About Election (by Dr. Timothy Paul Jones)

November 7, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Dr. Timothy Paul Jones is Associate Vice President for Online Learning and Professor of Leadership and Church Ministry at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He blogs at his eponymous site. A editorial comment is in order here. I have pretty much shut off discussions of Calvinism, because they have been so unproductive. But this post was too good to pass on!  When have we ever discussed the "Defenestration of Prague?"  So, let's defy the odds and have a productive discussion of Calvinism and Arminianism! Defenestration and Divine Election in Seventeeth-Century Europe By the opening … [Read more...] about Church History: How Christians Settled an Argument About Election (by Dr. Timothy Paul Jones)

A New Era: Where Christians Are a Cultural Minority?

November 7, 2012 by Dave Miller

For clarity, I am speaking in this post of biblically-based, gospel-founded Christianity, not cultural Christianity or Christendom.  A friend mentioned the other day that there were 4 billion "Christians" on earth. Not sure where that statistic comes from, but does any of us really believe that there are 4 billion "born-again" Christians - those who have repented of their sins and trusted Jesus Christ alone (and consciously) for their salvation. I grew up in a Christianized, Christian-centric, Christian-sympathetic world. I have heard arguments on both sides, but I do not believe that the … [Read more...] about A New Era: Where Christians Are a Cultural Minority?

An Election Night Open Forum

November 6, 2012 by Dave Miller

Be nice. Tell us what you think. It seems to me that we will know the likely outcome when they are finished counting Florida and Ohio.  Romney probably needs both. Who will control the House and Senate?     … [Read more...] about An Election Night Open Forum

SBC Voices’ 2000th Post

November 6, 2012 by Dave Miller

When I was a coach, I was a little bit of a stats nut. I tend to be the same way with my blogging. We don't publish our numbers, but they are tracked. I can't help but look at them. This is the 2000th post in SBC Voices history! It might surprise no one that I have written the most posts - 582 to this point. Tony Kummer (our fearless leader) has published 196, Jared Moore has added 168, and Mike Leake has published 12o. No one else is above 100 posts. We've had posts from 29 people, in addition to 167 that are classified under our "Guest Blogger" designation. In the approximately 5 … [Read more...] about SBC Voices’ 2000th Post

Observations on the Democrat Process in This Republic

November 6, 2012 by Dave Miller

1) I am amazed that I am not required to show any form of ID to vote. Every election there are accusations of massive fraud and yet we still allow people to vote without the simple requirement that I demonstrate that I am David Miller from 4330 Old Lakeport Road and I am duly registered and qualified to vote. Is there any legitimate reason NOT to require people to show proof of their identity before voting other than the desire to keep open the option to engage in electoral fraud? 2) Has there ever been an election with as many moral and spiritual quandaries as this one? The evangelical … [Read more...] about Observations on the Democrat Process in This Republic

I Voted Today… for Tim Pawlenty

November 6, 2012 by David Rogers

I voted today…  for Tim Pawlenty. I know a lot of you, after reading that, have already decided that I am an idiot. Perhaps I am. From what I understand, in the state of Tennessee, where I live and where I voted, the votes of those whose names were not on the ballot were not even tallied. And Pawlenty’s name was not on the ballot. That means, from the perspective of some, that my vote meant absolutely nothing. I have taken that into consideration, and thought long and hard about it, but at the end of day came to the conclusion that, at least, by way of this blog, and by Facebook, and Twitter, … [Read more...] about I Voted Today… for Tim Pawlenty
