As I think about the future of the SBC, I think about the leaders, the decisions and the direction. What is happening today, will it be continued and build upon, or will there be a new direction? Will things change and make sweeping changes? Will all the decisions and direction of today be wiped away in 20 years? I guess you will have to ask the leaders who will be leading in twenty years. That will be. . . me and my friends. Scary thought isn't it. At the risk of losing all credibility, I am 35 years old. I have waited for the day I'll be old enough to be taken seriously, but I … [Read more...] about The Future of the SBC
A Response to Denny Burk’s Post on the Importance of Complementarianism to the Gospel by Wm Dwight McKissic, SR.
Wm Dwight McKissic, Sr. is the pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, TX. This post appeared on August 30 at his personal blog. This should be a good discussion! Denny Burk recently posted an interesting and provocative piece regarding the relationship and importance of complementarianism and inerrancy to the Gospel. I have two responses to Denny Burk’s post which is summed up in the following quote: “The gymnastics required to get from ‘I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man,’ in the Bible, to ‘I do allow a woman to teach and to exercise … [Read more...] about A Response to Denny Burk’s Post on the Importance of Complementarianism to the Gospel by Wm Dwight McKissic, SR.
Angry or Compromised? Shrill or Silent? Seeking Middle Ground in Christian Social Engagement
It was so predictable. David Rogers posted some comments here from DA Carson about the dangers of angry Christians being involved in politics. Dr. Carson, not a left-winger by any reasonable standard, was simply saying that when we engage in anger on politics, we undermine evangelism - our ultimate goal. Here was Carson's money quote. But at the end of the day, if you can’t do it with compassion, and gently, and leave the doors open for evangelism, boy, you destroy everything. I think one of the devil’s tactics with respect to the church on the Right today is to make them so hate everybody … [Read more...] about Angry or Compromised? Shrill or Silent? Editor: Yielding to the inevitable, I am naming the Rev. Dr. CB Scott as the Sports Editor of SBC Voices. It is just the recognition of reality! Hello Sports Fans! The weekend we have all been waiting for is upon us. During these dull months with nothing but Trad and Cal fights to attend in the Baptist Blog World I know you all have been longing with baited breath for College FOOTBALL season to arrive so you can feel alive once more as the leaves fall down to the earth and the B-B-Q smoke ascends into the clouds. It is my good pleasure as a bona fide FOOTBALL genius and prognosticator to … [Read more...] about OPENING DAY (by SBC Voices Sports Editor CB Scott)
The Present-Day Relevance of the Universal Church
With the following words, The Baptist Faith and Message 2000 recognizes the New Testament existence of both the local and universal aspects of the church: A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth... The New Testament speaks also of the church as the Body of Christ … [Read more...] about The Present-Day Relevance of the Universal Church
The Modern Megachurch and the Wisdom of J.C Ryle (by Paul Thompson)
Paul Thompson blogs at "The Bridge" and is a pastor between here and Japan somewhere! He was our second place blogger in the Blue Collar Blog Madness tournament this year. Last night I read two interesting pieces. One from Medical News Today, the other from J.C. Ryle Quotes. Medical News Today: Like A Drug: The Rise Of American Megachurches This article was about recent research by University of Washington about the rise of the American Megachurch. I found the article interesting... I think the observations by researcher, James Wellman could be spoken of more than just the megachurch. … [Read more...] about The Modern Megachurch and the Wisdom of J.C Ryle (by Paul Thompson)
Adrian Rogers’ Flub
This is a perfect example why we should judge The Gospel Project for what it says, not for who said what: Adrian Rogers, considered one of the preeminent Southern Baptists in recent history, wrote What Every Christian Ought to Know, a book that has been used in many SBC churches to disciple new believers in the basics of what Christians believe. I have used this book myself with new believers because it is short, easy to understand, and introduces some core Christian beliefs without getting too in-depth for a new believer to understand. However, I’m reconsidering using What Every … [Read more...] about Adrian Rogers’ Flub
A Plea To Overlook Offenses Instead of Just Looking For Them
…there’s always someone around recording the things someone says and does, presumably for the purpose of scrutiny. -Dana Carvey The above quote comes from an article wherein Dana Carvey laments the “scary and dangerous” trend of comics refusing to mock President Obama. I’m not really concerned about what Carvey is saying in regards to our president, but what I do find interesting is his observation that we are so ridiculously sensitive in our culture. And we are also diligent in reading and processing information (usually quickly and out of context) and just as diligent in looking for … [Read more...] about A Plea To Overlook Offenses Instead of Just Looking For Them
Why Wovenism isn’t just Calvinism repackaged
As I have written on my theological system, Woven Theology, and I have been asked by some people how it's different from Calvinism. There are lot of similarities, but as many differences. I will try to unpack them, and I realize in doing so I will upset some people. The reason for this is my first reason for abandoning the current theological labels. They don't adequately describe the beliefs held by a group of people. As soon as you say "Calvinist believe. . . " someone well say "I'm a Calvinist, and I don't believe that." I am going to make some wide general statements concerning … [Read more...] about Why Wovenism isn’t just Calvinism repackaged
