The Coyote and Rightly Assessing Our Social Media Influence

October 28, 2016 by Mike Leake

I remember reading somewhere that a tiny band of coyotes have a way of making themselves sound much more numerous than they actually are. In fact, I think I heard that in a sermon illustration designed for encouraging pastors in the midst of conflict. Often when somebody comes to a pastor and says, “people are talking, pastor”, what they really mean is, “My three friends and I are talking and assume that most everyone else would be on our side too”. I’ve thought of that illustration often when I’ve had to field criticism. I’ve learned to ask for the names of the coyotes so that I can more … [Read more...] about The Coyote and Rightly Assessing Our Social Media Influence

Is There a Path to Post-Election Peace in the Evangelical Church?

October 12, 2016 by Dave Miller

Some of those folks out there are really arguing about Hillary, Trump, and the 2016 election, aren't they? I'm so glad I'm not like those folks. I've been amused recently in seeing posts denouncing political discussions. "It's such a waste of time and I hate it." There may be some truth in that, but without fail, those comments come from people who have lobbed bomb after bomb on post after post. I have dropped out of political discussions completely - about a dozen times. Then, "just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in." Is there any sort of path to peace, short of one side … [Read more...] about Is There a Path to Post-Election Peace in the Evangelical Church?

Are We Being Played? Is the Election a Big Con?

October 9, 2016 by Dave Miller

My disdain for conspiracy theories is pretty well public here on SBC Voices. Most conspiracies are absurd and assume a big, bad boogeyman running things in a way that usually doesn't exist in reality. But there is a little voice in the back of my head that wonders about this election - is it possible that the mainstream media is working to ensure that Hillary Clinton makes it into the Oval Office? I have some reservations about that premise, three primary ones: Hillary has had a somewhat prickly relationship with the press. Would they really engage in a grand scheme to win an election for … [Read more...] about Are We Being Played? Is the Election a Big Con?

Vote Your Conscience (Bill MacKinnon)

October 7, 2016 by Guest Blogger

Bill MacKinnon is a regular on this site, commenting under the name "Bill Mac." Vote your conscience.  Those words were spoken by Ted Cruz at the 2016 Republican National Convention.  It was met with boos, jeers, and outrage.  Why?  Because “Vote for Donald Trump” was the only acceptable answer.  Trump had repeatedly called Cruz a liar.  He had mocked the appearance of Heidi Cruz.  He had implied that Cruz’s father was involved in the assassination of President Kennedy.  And yet the party faithful expected Cruz to swallow all that and endorse Trump.  Why? Because power trumps integrity, no … [Read more...] about Vote Your Conscience (Bill MacKinnon)

Three Reasons for Christians to Stay Quiet on Social Media Tonight (Joel Rainey)

September 26, 2016 by Guest Blogger

Dr. Joel Rainey is husband to Amy, father of three, and Lead Pastor at Covenant Church, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He serves on the adjunct faculty of two seminaries, and the author of three books. This was originally published at Joel's blog, themelios. "Clinton-Trump Debate Expected to Be Rare Draw in a Polarized Age." That was the New York Times headline that led my news feed yesterday.  The article predicted the possibility of as many as 100 million viewers--20 million more than the 1980 debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan that has thus far held the record for the … [Read more...] about Three Reasons for Christians to Stay Quiet on Social Media Tonight (Joel Rainey)

WHEN THE CURRENT DISCUSSION SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE PAST – SORT OF! WHAT IS THE CHURCH REALLY CALLED TO DO? (Louis)

September 13, 2016 by Guest Blogger

This week I was surprised to hear a portion of President Bill Clinton's 1995 State of the Union Address (It's less than 2 minutes in length).   https://youtu.be/m3yesvvYEvs   As you can see, President Clinton's remarks received a bipartisan standing ovation from the members of Congress in attendance at the speech. I really don't know what to say about this.  There is so much that could be said. For one, Clinton sounds just like Donald Trump. A search of Hillary Clinton's former statements regarding illegal immigration are similar.  Mrs. Clinton's current … [Read more...] about WHEN THE CURRENT DISCUSSION SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE PAST – SORT OF! Seriously. It is time to help Louisiana Flood Victims. This is Ridiculous.

August 22, 2016 by Alan Cross

I spent the weekend traveling across South Louisiana from Livingston Parish where 100,000 of the 130,000 people's homes were affected, to Baton Rouge, to Ascension Parish where there are still towns and neighborhoods cut off and under water. Everywhere I went, the devastation was plain to see - and overwhelming. This is a different kind of disaster. The outside of buildings are okay, but the insides of homes, churches, and businesses are ruined. And, the destruction goes on for miles and miles and miles.     Hundreds of thousands of people have lost everything. The vast majority had no … [Read more...] about Seriously. Southern Baptists: Time to Help Louisiana Flood Victims

August 18, 2016 by Alan Cross

HOW TO HELP: LOUISIANA BAPTISTS HAVE A CONTACT PAGE Tens of thousands of people displaced. Whole towns submerged under water. Livingston Parish has seen most of its homes destroyed. The town of Denham Springs was 90% under water. The Louisiana Floods caused by a low pressure system dumped over SIX TRILLION gallons of water on Louisiana. 2 feet of rain. Homes flooded. People have lost all of their possessions. Shelters have filled up with thousands of people. The Red Cross and FEMA are saying that this is the worst natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast. The cost of damage … [Read more...] about Southern Baptists: Time to Help Louisiana Flood Victims

NONE of the Above: An Examination of Our Election Options

July 29, 2016 by Dave Miller

I've been voting since the first time an unelected president ran for reelection. You politics geeks can figure that one out, right? By my count, I've voted for president 10 times and I'm batting .500. This was going to be a tie-breaker election for me but now I'm seriously considering whether I should even vote at all. I know that offends some who consider voting a sacred duty, but so far I've found absolutely no options for me. So now, post-convention, in this break before the real electioneering fires up, I have a few things to say. After I say them, it is my intent to retire from writing … [Read more...] about NONE of the Above: An Examination of Our Election Options

Richard Land Interview On Immigration Reform and the Rule of Law

July 26, 2016 by Alan Cross

The When Heaven and Earth Collide podcast airs next an interview that I conducted in June at the Southern Baptist Convention with Dr. Richard Land, president of Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Land is the former long-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) where he also helped organize the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT) and was a founding member. I hosted an Evangelical Immigration Table booth at the SBC and was able to conduct almost two dozen interviews with Southern Baptist pastors and leaders, including Dr. … [Read more...] about Richard Land Interview On Immigration Reform and the Rule of Law
