Give Mike Law credit. He didn’t like his kids to look up and see a woman behind a pulpit so he found out how to fix that. He was straight up about it even though ridiculously zealous and wild eyed. He even admitted that the women (whom he patronizingly called “sisters living in disobedience,” as if they were shacked up somewhere) were saved. Neither Lottie Moon nor Bertha Smith would have been amused.
He failed but you can count on the misogynists/sexists/chauvinists in the SBC to keep at it. Juan Sanchez failed. Well, he admitted he knew nothing about the deep weeds of amending our governing docs. Now the SBC gives the world its leading theologian and longest serving recognizable leader: Al Mohler.
Mohler steps up to the plate for the woman pastor amendment.
Whiff.
He proposes. Then undoes his proposal with wild commentary. Then disposes of his proposition.
Someone explain all this to a sentient human being.
A few observations from an irascible curmudgeon who remembers Adrian Rogers in his prime, and even now, over two decades after his death.
- The anti-women zealots we will have with us always. It’s not about doctrinal fidelity. It’s about the irrational ire generated by a woman who is called a pastor who is in charge of preschoolers. Thank God for that woman, whatever a church chooses to call her.
- Of all people, Al Mohler should support the deliberative process. Instead, finger to the wind, he chooses to try and bulldoze it.
- We have a long history of broad support, ‘unity’ one might call it, of a male being the lead, senior pastor. If church trends have brought us the 21st century American model of affluent churches with paid staff and these churches change preference for staff titles, big deal.
- This amendment isn’t about unity although it might be about legacy.
- Pass or fail, nothing will be fixed.
- The national SBC should not attempt to deal with individual churches until it starts excluding other churches whose pastors, males, are not biblically qualified.
- The SBC is essentially leaderless right now.
But, I understand my day is past. No one reads blogs. The syphocants and wannabees still have the floor. And, Orlando in June is intolerable.
Spend that expense account freely. Go to one of those AYCE lobster places after your Fantasyland adventure is over.
