A little more than a day after receiving information from J.D. Greear on the 10 churches named in the Houston Chronicle’s series of articles, the Bylaws Committee of the Executive Committee issued a wholly inadequate response that called for further inquiry into three of the churches, absolved six of them by saying that no further inquiry was needed, and pointed out that one of the churches was not SBC-affiliated. (The offender in the non-SBC church moved from an SBC church after committing the offense, so it is easy to see how the Chronicle did not figure that out.) This report cannot … [Read more...] about The EC Bylaws Committee Investigation Cannot Stand
Greenway is Ninth President of Southwestern
Dr. Adam Greenway has been unanimously elected the ninth president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, according to a release on the SWBTS website. He was also elected as a professor of evangelism and apologetics. In addition to Greenway, the board named Randy L. Stinson as provost and vice president for academic administration, also unanimously. They affirmed the work of Dr. Jeffrey Bingham during the time he was interim president, an affirmation I would strongly affirm. I have spoken to many from the seminary who tell of the work he has done in providing stability and a positive … [Read more...] about Greenway is Ninth President of Southwestern
A Word of Appreciation to J.D. Greear
I imagine there were some gasps last night among those in the Executive Committee meeting room when J.D. Greear laid out his plan for responding to the current abuse scandal which we’ve known about for a while and has been made national news by the Houston Chronicle. We are not used to this kind of bold and forceful leadership in response to charges of sexual abuse in the SBC. There was also anger directed at J.D. among some who thought he went too far when he named several churches – churches that were identified by the Chronicle as having hired or not responded appropriately to the … [Read more...] about A Word of Appreciation to J.D. Responding to “Abuse of Faith” and the #Metoo Movement
NOTE: I just read the third installment, and to be honest, I may be sick. It is hard to read. Wow. Demented men. NOTE: the second installment is out and is more specific, more maddening, and more saddening than the first. I will turn your stomach. I appreciate the research of the journalists at the Chronicle. They have done an excellent job of showing the problem. I read the first installment of the Houston Chronicle's "Abuse of Faith" story with much fear and trembling. The fact is that for those of us who have been following this story, there was little new there. The details … [Read more...] about Responding to “Abuse of Faith” and the #Metoo Movement
Is Racism the Reason We’ve Had NO Minority Interviews?
I made the assertion in a previous post, based on solid information that has been given to me, that there have been no minority interviews in the hiring processes at our entities. I asked, even begged for information to correct that. If one of the search teams has interviewed a minority, I would love to be corrected and will publicly and loudly publish that correction. To this point, I have received no such corrections. So, assuming that there have been minority applicants (there have - qualified ones) and that these minority applicants have not gotten through the vetting process to the … [Read more...] about Is Racism the Reason We’ve Had NO Minority Interviews?
Growing Concern over Search Committees and Minorities
The Biblical Recorder has an article that was just published concerning a letter by pastors James Merritt, Vance Pitman, and Bryant Wright, written to the Search Committee for the EC, expressing concerns about the perceived lack of minority involvement in the hiring process. The article is entitled Diversity in focus as Baptists await EC announcement. The article says that many expect an announcement of the candidate for president of the EC at the February 18-19 EC meeting. The three pastors are asking whether any minorities have been interviewed. Perspectives 1. We do not have to … [Read more...] about Growing Concern over Search Committees and Minorities
Todd Lafferty to Become IMB Executive VP
The IMB is announcing that Todd Lafferty will be recommended to the IMB Board of Trustees at their February 6-7 meeting to become the Executive Vice President, working with Dr. Paul Chitwood. Here is a press release from IMB where you can read about him. This has been expected since before Dr Chitwood was announced. We were told by multiple knowledgeable sources that Lafferty would be appointed with Dr. Chitwood and our initial post announcing Dr. Chitwood's candidacy for the IMB presidency carried Todd Lafferty's name as well. We removed it quickly, and have no idea what the process … [Read more...] about Todd Lafferty to Become IMB Executive VP
The Man We Need in Nashville
We are shaped by our experiences and my year as president of the SBC Pastors’ Conference opened my eyes in many ways. I saw the very best of the SBC and I saw some things that disturbed me greatly. I was blown away at the support we received from our entities as they helped a group of smaller church pastors put on what our feedback indicated was a successful conference. We also saw resistance from those who felt the conference belonged to the celebrity pastors and that by running and winning that election we had done something wrong. But from the day we found out we had won to the day we … [Read more...] about The Man We Need in Nashville
JD Greear names Curtis Woods as Chair of Resolutions Committee
Curtis Woods, co-interim executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention since November, has been named by SBC President J.D. Greear as the chair of the Resolutions Committee. Keith Whitfield, a vice-president as Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been named the vice chairman. The rest of the committee will be named at a later date. The Baptist Press article can be seen here. A few relevant passages from the article, written by David Roach. Woods, who served on the 2018 SBC Resolutions Committee, will be only the second African American to chair the committee, according … [Read more...] about JD Greear names Curtis Woods as Chair of Resolutions Committee
A Plea to the Trustees of Southwestern
There are things I believe I know something about and things I know I know nothing about. Running a seminary is one thing I know that I know nothing about. I know a little something from my years on the Executive Board of the BCI, and on its Admin Team, about accounting for a non-profit, just enough to know that the ins and outs of the use of temporarily restricted funds at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is beyond my ability to understand and opine. I have largely stayed out of those discussions. I have also advocated "trusting the trustees" because we don't have a lot of … [Read more...] about A Plea to the Trustees of Southwestern
