“The Greatest Nation on Earth?” A Balanced Look at American Exceptionalism

February 2, 2016 by Dave Miller

Originally published at "Dave Miller Daily." I had an interesting conversation several years ago with a friend who served as a missionary in an Asian nation. The people in that nation love their homeland but do not have the kind of passionate patriotic loyalty to it that Americans, and especially conservative Americans, have for our homeland. "Americans have a level of patriotism, nationalism, and national pride that other nations just don't have." It is crucially important to many people, a point of doctrine, a test of political orthodoxy, to believe and proclaim that America is not only … [Read more...] about “The Greatest Nation on Earth?” A Balanced Look at American Exceptionalism

Initial Thoughts on a Night at the Iowa Caucuses

February 2, 2016 by Dave Miller

Originally published at Dave Miller Daily I just got home from the caucuses (well, from getting some gas for my snowblower and such - we are supposed to get a foot to foot and a half of snow tomorrow) and I have some initial thoughts. 1. When I drove in to the community center, my heart sank. Last time, we parked in the main area and walked in. This time, I dropped my wife off and drove to Kansas City, where I parked and walked to the door. There was a long line to enter and sign in. Many of the people in the line were filling out the registration cards, to switch their registration to … [Read more...] about Initial Thoughts on a Night at the Iowa Caucuses

Speaking of President…What about St. Louis and the SBC?

January 27, 2016 by Dave Miller

I've been asked several times, "Do you hear any scuttlebutt about who is going to run for president of the SBC in St. Louis?" The answer is, "No," - and yes. I've heard nothing specific, nothing firm, nothing absolute. But I have heard one rumor, since way back even before the last convention. Here is what I've been hearing. There is an SBC entity head seriously considering a run for SBC President. The people that have spoken to me have been non-specific, and have not named the name of the entity head. I have a strong guess who it probably is, if the rumor is true. (I have to tell you, … [Read more...] about Speaking of President…What about St. Louis and the SBC?

Donald Trump IS Barack Obama

January 27, 2016 by Dave Miller

Originally posted at "Dave Miller Daily." There are a lot of words you could use to describe Donald Trump. Narcissist - his focus and concern isn't America, it's all about Donald Trump. He judges people, press, and everyone by "how they treat me." "It's all about ME," according to Trump. Misogynist - his treatment of women is despicable. No more need be said. Racist – it is not too much of a stretch to use this word to describe his border policy and his treatment of Muslims. Bully - he is mean-spirited, vindictive, and nasty. Bizarre – he says and does some of the most … [Read more...] about Donald Trump IS Barack Obama

A Moment of Clarity: Idolatry and American Christianity

January 23, 2016 by Dave Miller

This was originally published at my new blogging venture, "Dave Miller Daily." Don't get your hopes up, I'm not planning to leave SBC Voices anytime soon. But I plan to write about broader interests - sports, politics, and other things, at that site, limiting my entries here more to the things that deal with the SBC. I will also, from time to time, double post, as I'm doing now. I had a moment of clarity in the villages west of Ziguinchor, Senegal a couple of weeks ago, one that helped me to understand the problems in American Christianity. For most of our history Americans have described … [Read more...] about A Moment of Clarity: Idolatry and American Christianity

Barnabas, in Search of Saul of Tarsus: Looking for a Missions Partner

January 20, 2016 by Dave Miller

A year ago I went for the first time to Senegal with Bart, to start working with the Unengaged, Unreached People Group (UUPG) known as the Essing. They are cousins to the people group Bart has been working with, the Bayot. He and his church are doing an amazing work west of Zinguinchor among the Bayot – after about four years things are coming together beautifully and they are beginning to see real fruit from their work. At some point they uncovered the existence of this group, the Essing, who live just a few kilometers away on the next peninsula along the Casamance. Bart mentioned on a blog … [Read more...] about Barnabas, in Search of Saul of Tarsus: Looking for a Missions Partner

BREAKING NEWS – Changes at the IMB (Clarification)

January 14, 2016 by Dave Miller

CLARIFICATION  - I will be going dark again soon, but I received some clarifying information. Evidently, this move - the communications department - is part of a complete restructuring of the stateside operations. I assume it is for cost-cutting and efficiency, but I'm no expert on that. The numbers I've been given range from 30 to 40 positions being eliminated.  However, it seems that not everyone is being terminated. Some may be kept on in lateral moves to other departments. I am writing from Ziguinchor, Senegal. The airport, surprisingly, had Wifi (and air conditioning - hallelujah!) … [Read more...] about BREAKING NEWS – Changes at the IMB (Clarification)

Pray for Bart Barber

January 2, 2016 by Dave Miller

I know that many of you are social media friends with Bart Barber. He is in Dakar, Senegal and having great trouble making connections to Ziguinchor, the ministry base from which his work with the Bayot people launches. He does amazing work there - God is at work among that UPG. He nearly missed his flight, then the Dakar to Zig flight was booked. The boat that sometime runs isn't running. He needs to get to Zig and he is having trouble. He's incredibly patient and may already have found a way, I don't know. Once you are in country, Internet becomes spotty at best. Pray for Bart as he … [Read more...] about Pray for Bart Barber

An Open Letter to the GOP: I Will NOT Vote for Donald Trump – EVER!

December 29, 2015 by Dave Miller

I have been a loyal part of the Grand Old Party since my first election cycle back in 1976 when I was one of the few people in my Baptist college who supported Gerald Ford against the Southern Baptist peanut farmer from Georgia. I volunteered for the Ford campaign (just a one day thing) and got to shake his hand. No, he did not stumble near me. I lived through the the heady Reagan Revolution and then watched it all unravel with the Clinton reversal. I have been a consistent and loyal Republican voter in national elections. If my count is correct, this stand to be a tie-breaking election for … [Read more...] about An Open Letter to the GOP: I Will NOT Vote for Donald Trump – EVER!

Hey Contributors, Fire When Ready

December 26, 2015 by Dave Miller

I'm headed out in the AM for points east. I won't be back till 2016. And when I get back I'll be headed overseas pretty quickly. I am planning to spend a lot of time neglecting SBC Voices over the next two to three weeks. I may write a post now and again. So, here are the rules. If you have a post, post it yourself. Wait at least 5 or 6 hours (or more) after someone else has posted. Scheduling a post isn't that hard. On the publish screen, set the date and time you want it to publish, then hit the schedule button. Each contributor is free to moderate comments as he sees fit. I may … [Read more...] about Hey Contributors, Fire When Ready
