Pictured above are my magnificent gospel beans, heirloom pole beans handed down in my wife's family for generations. These beans made the trek in a wagon down the eastern seaboard and across Georgia and Alabama to northeast Mississippi. The family story is told that in the 19th century one ancestor, a woman, traveled through Indian territory with her wagon, children, and one cow. She was stopped by Indians and they kept the cow but allowed her to continue. In the wagon were seeds for the next crop, including these bean seeds. At least six generations of my wife's family, ones alive during … [Read more...] about The sorry state of SBC evangelism and ye old time gospel beans
A pastor looks at immigration and immigration policy
My friend and colleague Alan Cross is an expert on immigration and immigration policy. Your humble, happy, semi-retired hacker and plodder SBC pastor is not. But I know what I am seeing and reading. While on a vigorous four mile walk yesterday morning (vigorous to me, approaching my eigth decade, is about 18 minutes per mile, less than that if I schedule a time trial, more than that if I get lazy or go uphill) I was drawn to some hammering and banging of a construction project, the universal magnet for old dudes. I sauntered over to observe. It was a reroofing job on a multi-unit office … [Read more...] about A pastor looks at immigration and immigration policy
Pure secular politics and the reality show that is the Democratic nomination process
It's a slow time at SBCV so... Two debates, four hours of snippets, indignation, and the party of free stuff is back on my radar. It's over two months until college football, so why not? Biden; from "Uncle Joe" to "Poor Uncle Joe"; looks feeble, frankly. Come on Joe, get stirred up about something. Michael Bennet; zzzz Pete Buttigieg; reminds me of Marco Rubio, always composed and competent. Kirsten Gillibrand; the incredible shrinking candidate; Madame Bromide. Kamala Harris; Kick Butt Kamala...told ya; has a nice warm smile and is likable. How about taking a stand on health … [Read more...] about Pure secular politics and the reality show that is the Democratic nomination process
No matter what, Southern Baptists can always brag
Baptisms may be in freefall, the Cooperative Program may be half of what it used to be, membership may be declining, and we might be in the grips of nasty controversies and extremely bad behavior by prominent SBCers...but Southern Baptists can always brag. Here are a few bragging points for some of the state conventions: Most Baptisms: Florida. The 2,709 SBC churches in Florida baptized 26,162 folks last year and that is tops among the state conventions. The Baptist General Convention of Texas had the second most, 23,181 but the venerable BGCT has over 1,600 more churches than the Florida … [Read more...] about No matter what, Southern Baptists can always brag
Malevolence, incompetence, and ignorance in the SBC concerning abuse
The SBC meeting in Birmingham is one week past. In this short time three horrific cases of sexual abuse of children involving the SBC at various levels have come to light. All of these are malevolent and deplorable. The nationally-known reporter for the Houston Chronicle and co-author of the long and depressing series on abuse in SBC churches, Robert Downen, related a conversation in an airport bar (where else?) with an SBCer returning home from the convention in Birmingham. Downen said that the man, an associational worker, attributed a lot of the SBC's problems as "not malevolence, but … [Read more...] about Malevolence, incompetence, and ignorance in the SBC concerning abuse
Your housing allowance is safe for the forseeable future
The group that brought the federal lawsuit against the cash version of the clergy housing allowance has decided not to appeal the unanimous Federal Appeals Court ruling that upheld the thing. They have a clever title to this news: Appeals Court Blesses Housing Allowance. Now's the time to start thinking about next year, brethren and sistren. Max your housing allowance out; that is, take as much of your clergy income in the form of the housing allowance as you can. It's our best tax break. If you own your own home here's what GuideStone says about the maximum: Ministers who own their … [Read more...] about Your housing allowance is safe for the forseeable future
#SBC19: home runs and whiffs
Probably my most enjoyable convention in quite some time, partly because I stayed in the HQ hotel with the SBC heavy hitters. I spent my own money doing so. They surely did not. Good to see Kevin Ezell in the lobby very early in the morning, 5:30-6:00, working for us. The Westin had some very helpful people. They worked out a problem for me: Home run Hey, Westin, your restaurant and coffee shop opens at 6:30 which is 7:30 real (Eastern) time: Whiff. Yeah, that's Johnny Hunt ahead of me walking at about the same pace. Well, we are about the same age. SBCV colleague Todd walked with me … [Read more...] about #SBC19: home runs and whiffs
On the forsuchatimeasthis rally
I made it a point to be at the rally. I suppose there were a hundred or so, some coming and going. Several of the leaders are people I have been following for a decade or more and I was pleased to meet and talk with them before and after the rally. Christa Brown and Dee Parsons (Wartburg Watch) were among these. Bob Allen (Baptist News Global), who has written more stories about SBC and other church related abuse for a longer time than any reporter I know, was there although I didn't get to meet him. Sad to say but Brown and Parsons and others have been treated quite poorly at times by … [Read more...] about On the forsuchatimeasthis rally
This is different
Maybe it's me but there's a different feel to the convention this year: it's better, fresher, younger, more energetic and vibrant, less perfunctory and predictable. Maybe it's because I'm spending my own money here and feel compelled to enjoy it and get my money's worth. I sit in on the Executive Committee meeting. It's Southern Baptist sausage making, reminds me of my own church business meetings at times, but they get it done. JD addresses the group. If he has written remarks he doesn't look at them; nonetheless, he hits every correct note. It looks to me like he is so thoroughly … [Read more...] about This is different
Set aside the obituary for the SBC annual meeting
"No one wants to go these days." "The crowds are shrinking." "Let's meet remotely, satellite locations, ballot by phone." "People can't afford to get there" The naysayers, whiners, and complainers with their doleful laments had the obit written for our grand SBC annual meeting. Better set that aside. Predictions of 10,000 are being tossed about. I'm here early. There's youth, energy, excitement, smiles, laughter, backslapping, and gaiety. Wine, I might note, is not being served. There's a different, positive, feel if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly and that with several … [Read more...] about Set aside the obituary for the SBC annual meeting
