Our Work Is Not Done – Hatley Motion to Dismiss SWBTS Trustees at 2:45 – DEFEATED

June 13, 2018 by Dave Miller

My phone sometimes doesn't post when it is supposed to. I hit publish...I thought.  I publish it now simply for the results.   This is how it is done. We approve the Trustees of our entities and we can remove them. That is why we are voting on Hatley's motion to dismiss the trustees of the Executive committee of SWBTS at 2:45 PM. The motion is in order. It is also a horrible idea. One of the worst to come to the floor in recent memory. Please show up to vote no. I assume a simple majority wins but this should be defeated by the kind of overwhelming majority that sends a … [Read more...] about Our Work Is Not Done – Hatley Motion to Dismiss SWBTS Trustees at 2:45 – DEFEATED

I Don’t Understand Minority Reactions to the VP Visit: That’s Why We NEED Each Other

June 13, 2018 by Dave Miller

I am not excited about the VP's visit tomorrow but it is for very different reasons than many of my friends and in the minority communities. For me any desire to hear the VP speak (and I have little) is more than balanced by the anticipated logistical nightmare that awaits us tomorrow. Bill Townes broke my heart when he told us that I can't bring glitter. No glitter! But several Black Southern Baptists took this appearance very differently - as a betrayal and an insult. As I read their tweets I was shocked at how great an offense this was. If it had been Trump I could have understood it … [Read more...] about I Don’t Understand Minority Reactions to the VP Visit: That’s Why We NEED Each Other

SBC18 news you’ll only find on SBC Voices

June 12, 2018 by William Thornton

Hard news about the SBC annual meeting doesn't exhaust the things coming out of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center this week. To wit... We are in the heart of Texas, there are about 10,000 registered messengers and I've seen only four or five cowboy hats. Probably a couple of ringers among those few. What's this state coming to? I was at the bar today, twice, a record for me. It was because restaurants were crowded. I asked one bartender if the alcohol was flowing freely. "Only one or two," he replied. I baptist-splained the situation to him. Great guy. A highly placed source … [Read more...] about SBC18 news you’ll only find on SBC Voices

Thoughts on the Nomination Speeches

June 12, 2018 by Dave Miller

Brad Jurkovich nominated Ken Hemphill, carrying forward the harsh tone of the Hemphill campaign. There was a negative tone to much of it. He insinuated that the Greear campaign was about putting wedges between old and young and denigrated Greear's sacrificial act from two years ago in stepping aside for Steve Gaines He did praise Hemphill profusely. Hemphill is a good man. Applause was polite at the end. Ken Whitten gave the more  traditional positive nomination speech. He focused on Greear's integrity,  clarity, and unity. He did not disparage Hemphill in any way. He did make it … [Read more...] about Thoughts on the Nomination Speeches

Introduction of Motions – with Predictions and Results

June 12, 2018 by Dave Miller

By my count, 12 motions were introduced.  As it normal,  most will get referred. Here they are. 1. Sam Fordham of Alabama moved the establishment of a new entity to promote evangelism and equipping. Not gonna happen. We are not forming a new entity. Probably gets referred to EC and dies. 2. Wade Burleson of OK Resurrected an old call to establish a sexual predator database. Again, not gonna happen. Referred. 3. Philip Bethancourt of TN. Moves a task force to deal with abuse and predation issues, develop strategies, and report back to the 2019 convention This will likely … [Read more...] about Introduction of Motions – with Predictions and Results

Free Book Recommendation: Mobilize to Evangelize by Dr. Matt Queen

June 12, 2018 by toddbenkert

As a biblioholic, one of the things I look forward to in each Convention is the opportunity for free books. I am sure to pick up many volumes over the next few days of quality, helpful material on a variety of topics. Most of our readers are aware of where to get some of the best free stuff our annual SBC trade show has to offer. This morning, I want to highlight one such book so you don't miss it. I commend to you picking up Dr. Matt Queen’s new book Mobilize to Evangelize: The Pastor and Effective Congregational Evangelism. The book will be the give-away today at the Southwestern Seminary … [Read more...] about Free Book Recommendation: Mobilize to Evangelize by Dr. Matt Queen

Is There An Effort to Put Anti-Moore Trustees on the ERLC Board?

June 12, 2018 by Guest Blogger

Editor's Note: We received this from Derrick Lynch Monday and are deeply concerned.  We checked out the story as best we could with several sources who confirmed it. The gist of this is a profoundly disturbing accusation which has been confirmed by three authoritative sources. Dan Anderson was replaced as a trustee of the ERLC because he refused to agree to oppose Dr. Russell Moore. Of course, this leads to a broader question. Is there a concerted effort to stack the ERLC board with anti-Moore trustees? Our hope is that this action was taken by a rogue committee member and does not … [Read more...] about Is There An Effort to Put Anti-Moore Trustees on the ERLC Board?
