On Trump, Moore, and Southern Baptists (By Jeff Wright)

March 2, 2017 by Guest Blogger

This weekend I read, perhaps like you, Jonathan Merritt’s piece in The Washington Post titled, “Southern Baptists who marginalize Russell Moore are making a grave mistake.”  I take the thesis of the piece to be that Russell Moore (and, by extension, the ERLC he leads) bring a helpful, unique, and needed perspective into Southern Baptist life as well as speaking profitably as representatives of Southern Baptists to the broad culture.  To put my cards on the table up front, I agree with that thesis.  However, Merritt’s tone in the article came across, at least to me, to be the voice of rebuke … [Read more...] about On Trump, Moore, and Southern Baptists (By Jeff Wright)

If Russell Moore is fired, “Unto Us” A Trump Baptist Convention Is Born By William Dwight McKissic, Sr

December 26, 2016 by Guest Blogger

If Russell Moore is fired, “Unto Us” A Trump Baptist Convention Is Born By William Dwight McKissic, Sr   The first cabinet member that soon-to-be President Donald Trump will fire, may not be in his White House Cabinet. Russell Moore, President of the Ethics, and Religious Liberty Commission of the SBC—a cabinet-level entity head position within the SBC org chart—will be the first person fired by the direct influence of Donald Trump and his influential supporters within SBC circles, if they are successful in their unprecedented public attempts, to discredit and dismiss from office the … [Read more...] about If Russell Moore is fired, “Unto Us” A Trump Baptist Convention Is Born By William Dwight McKissic, Sr

October 17-23: A Trump/Clinton Free Week at SBC Voices

October 17, 2016 by Dave Miller

Like the Pirates Code, many of my rules are more like guidelines than they are actual rules, and I know that articles about Trump/Clinton/the election have been one of my staples in recent weeks, but I think we need to take a break. C'mon guys. Let's talk about the Calvinist conspiracy, or beverage alcohol, or whether strict tithing is still required biblically. Here's the thing: there's a lot of stuff to talk about but there comes a point when we keep saying the same things over and over again. NeverTrump. A vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary. Lesser of evils. Trump is not … [Read more...] about October 17-23: A Trump/Clinton Free Week at SBC Voices

Another View of the Trump Candidacy (by Louis)

August 4, 2016 by Guest Blogger

The heat does not seem do die down in Christian circles regarding this year's election. Most of the heat that I have seen this year has come from Christian leaders belittling people who are voting for Donald Trump. I heard a discussion on NPR about why some evangelicals were voting for Trump by a well known SBC leader.  The reasons given were:  1) They were betraying their values; 2) They were racist or nativist; 3) They weren't really evangelicals, but just nominal church attenders; and 4) Deep down they sought authoritarian rule (and yes, Hitler came up). So, of all the motivations … [Read more...] about Another View of the Trump Candidacy (by Louis)

Moore, Trump, and Our Gospel Witness in a Time of Political Turmoil

May 19, 2016 by Alan Cross

This was originally posted at Alan's site on May 9. I was supposed to put it up here, but I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off! Sorry, Alan. It is a pretty good counterpoint to the harsher treatment that appeared here on Saturday.  Let's try to have a civil discussion, people.  I have met Dr. Russell Moore and have spoken with him many times and know him to be nothing of the sort. I also know many who know him far better than I do and they would say the same. In his defense, I wrote this on Facebook this morning regarding the tweet from Donald Trump featured … [Read more...] about Moore, Trump, and Our Gospel Witness in a Time of Political Turmoil

Democracy: The Only Problem with Stopping Trump

May 10, 2016 by Tony Kummer

It's been one week, but I'm still shocked by the failure of Indiana voters to stop Donald Trump. It looks like I'm stuck with this billboard every day until November. This was our May 9th INDIANA results (ignoring party lines). Trump 587,706 Cruz 404,327 Sanders 331,707 Clinton 297,150 Kasich 82,786 That was Indiana voters choosing Donald Trump. Democracy. Notice that both also-ran Republicans combined could not have won. More remarkable, both Democrats combined would only have a 41,151 advantage against Trump. That's not conclusive of anything, but it makes me a … [Read more...] about Democracy: The Only Problem with Stopping Trump

You Are Invited: A Voices Super PAC Discussion – What about Florida and NeverTrump?

March 7, 2016 by Dave Miller

Okay, guys, it's time for some strategy. I have to admit that this election cycle has confused me more than any before. The American electorate has changed and I just don't understand it anymore. But there's a big question that we, the members of the SBC Voices Super PAC (we've contributed 0$ to 0 candidates and raised $0 so far) need to discuss. It's about the upcoming Florida GOP primary. It is one of the first 2 winner-take-all primaries and there are about 100 delegates (perhaps 99?) at stake. The guy with the most votes gets them ALL!  If Trump wins, he's on his way to the nomination. If … [Read more...] about You Are Invited: A Voices Super PAC Discussion – What about Florida and NeverTrump?

Trump? Nope. Never.

December 8, 2015 by William Thornton

There is no circumstance under which I would vote for Donald Trump. Trump represents or exhibits most of the things that run counter to the Christian values, morals, virtues, and principles I have spent half a lifetime attempting to model, preach, and teach. Am I to classify these as mere trivialities such that in the interest of political expediency I would be willing to reject them all in order to have a Republican president for our country? Nope. Not now. Not ever. His personal morality is not atypical for our times but hardly represents anything in the neighborhood of Christian … [Read more...] about Trump? Nope. Never.

Trump’s Victims or, How Else Do You Explain It? Let the Debate Continue (Todd Littleton)

September 16, 2015 by Guest Blogger

This is not about Megyn Kelley after the first Republican debate where Trump said, "There was blood coming out of her." It is not about Carly Florina about whom Trump said, "look at that face." Nor does it concern Governor Jindal who was the brunt of the Trump retort, "I don't respond to anyone not polling above 1%." It is not about Jeb Bush, Illegal Immigrants, China, Mexico, or Nabisco. Trump appears to always be misunderstood. He is always the victim, or so it seems. Victims As Supporters Maybe it is an audacious claim. It could be a desperate search for a reasonable, or not so … [Read more...] about Trump’s Victims or, How Else Do You Explain It? Let the Debate Continue (Todd Littleton)

Playing the TRUMP Card (Bill MacKinnon)

September 14, 2015 by Guest Blogger

As you know from my last contribution to SBC Voices, I am a big fan of science fiction.  One common theme in science fiction is the idea of parallel universes.  The multi-verse theory suggests, in part, that there are an infinite number of universes besides the one we inhabit.  In scifi, the parallel universes are typically much like ours, but with differences, sometimes subtle, sometimes not-so-subtle.  The protagonist is typically transported to a parallel world where he or she has to cope with the differences and find their way home. I’m pretty open minded when it comes to a lot of … [Read more...] about Playing the TRUMP Card (Bill MacKinnon)
