“You Want Me to Do WHAT?”

May 22, 2019 by Dave Miller

I am glad Bart is on his sabbatical on Mt. Ararat or Disneyworld or wherever, because I may say some things about him I would hate for him to hear. Better to speak behind his back. A few years ago he mentioned needing someone to minister to a UUPG his church had identified next to his UUPG called the Bayot in the Casamance region of Southern Senegal. I was looking for something like this and I said I would go. I hung out with Bart for a week and had a great time. Here's the part I am not sure I have ever told Dr. Barber. I spent much of that week trying to concoct a reasonable excuse … [Read more...] about “You Want Me to Do WHAT?”

Prayers for IMB May 22, 2019

May 22, 2019 by Tony Jones

This post will be short, but significant. There are IMB missionaries serving in dangerous places.  Their heroism and sacrifice amaze me, and strengthen my faith.  They serve in obscurity.  Their names may never be known, but their work is known by our Heavenly Father, and they are, as Paul wrote, "Pressing forward to take hold the goal because Christ has taken hold of them."  In every missionary commissioning service, there are blacked out faces, and some of the candidates can't even come out on stage.  I received an email full of prayer requests from one such missionary family.  I cannot … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB May 22, 2019

Sex abuse victim advocates and victims will rally in Birmingham #SBC19

May 21, 2019 by William

I can't think of any topic that will dominate the SBC Annual Meeting in Birmingham moreso than sex abuse. While the SBC is meeting in Birmingham, sex abuse victim advocates and victims will hold a rally. This is the ForSuchATimeAsThisRally. It will be held outside the convention center on Tuesday, June 11, from 5 to 6:45 pm. Stated goals include: Women should be respected and honored within the SBC. The low view of women has contributed to an abuse-empowering church culture. A clergy abuse database must be established documenting confessed, convicted or credibly accused abusers. … [Read more...] about Sex abuse victim advocates and victims will rally in Birmingham #SBC19

2019 SBC Annual Meeting Schedule

May 21, 2019 by Adam

We are now just 21 days from the start of 2019 Southern Baptist Convention. You know by now that the theme established by SBC President JD Greear is Gospel Above All from 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. I am looking forward to being in Birmingham for a couple of days as we hear reports, consider recommendations, and celebrate what God is doing in and through our convention of churches. The schedule for this year's annual meeting was released a few weeks ago. You can find it on the annual meeting website or at Baptist Press. The proposed schedule must be approved by the messengers once we arrive in … [Read more...] about 2019 SBC Annual Meeting Schedule

Prayers for IMB May 20, 2019

May 20, 2019 by Tony Jones

Good morning everyone.  I hope everyone had a great day at church yesterday.  I have a couple of prayer requests from Europe this morning.  If you'd like to spend some more time in prayer for our IMB missionaries, click over to Prayers for IMB Poland--Pray for students from California Baptist University working on a university campus in Warsaw, Poland. The students will be hosting a daily coffee shop to meet students and share their faith. There are several special events planned on campus each evening. Pray that students from the university will be open to hear the gospel, attend the … [Read more...] about Prayers for IMB May 20, 2019

A Stark Reminder of Easter’s Victory

May 19, 2019 by Dave Miller

I recently visited my dad and mom at their home in Florida and had a great time sitting and talking with them. I am a bad son. When I get time away from the church I tend to visit my grandkids and I haven't been down to Florida in several years. I was trying to plan a trip to Florida in conjunction with the SBC in Birmingham and my deacons sort of chided me that I needed to get down there sooner and see my parents. As I started planning things, I realized that April 28, the Sunday I was planning to be gone, was also my dad's 90th birthday. The years have been tough on dad. I will not be … [Read more...] about A Stark Reminder of Easter’s Victory

Why Do They Hate Us? A (Totally and Completely Serious) Plea on Behalf of Corpulent Baptists (Really!)

May 18, 2019 by Dave Miller

As I write this (Monday May 13) I am wearing a nifty "Send Relief" t-shirt  - for the first time. When I received it, the largest size they had was 2xl and I was 3xl and in some shirts even bigger. I am now able to wear the 2xl. You guys know me. I"m all about the group hugs and never want to be critical. "If you can't say something nice" Dave. But something happened to me last year at the Annual Meeting that must be addressed - an issue of discrimination against Corpulent Baptists. When I go to the Annual Meeting, I'm all about the free stuff at the display area. One year, I decided to … [Read more...] about Why Do They Hate Us? Can we avoid an SBC Hobbesian nightmare on gender issues?

May 17, 2019 by William

Contributors here at SBC Voices have a couple of articles this week on the SBC and gender. These looked to me to be among the most irenic and amicable approaches possible to an issue that is important to the SBC. Elsewhere, teeth have been set on edge with more vicious and forceful discussions. Brent Hobbs, for whom the title of this article is not written, wrote about Cooperation and Complexity on the Question of Women Preaching. His final paragraph: This is a big, complex question. And it deserves better than the simplistic treatment it’s received recently. As Southern Baptists we are … [Read more...] about Can we avoid an SBC Hobbesian nightmare on gender issues?

SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In

May 17, 2019 by Brent Hobbs

One year ago today Alan Cross and I announced the launch of the SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative. I wanted to celebrate the progress we’ve made this year and update our readers on some of what we’ve seen. The LDI was designed as a networking tool for us to be able to discover and identify Southern Baptists for potential leadership roles who we might otherwise be unaware of, particularly ethnic minorities, women, and lay persons. We want to open the floodgates and remove as many barriers as possible to achieve our goal: A convention where ethnic minority leaders and members, as well as … [Read more...] about SBC Leadership Diversity Initiative – One Year In
