Reflections on Martyrdom (by Nick Horton)

February 20, 2015 by Guest Blogger

This post originally appeared at "Borrowed Light," Mike Leake's blog.  On Sunday the 15th, the frigid wind blew outside my home as windchills dropped to 35 below. Arctic air had pushed out of the North bringing snow squalls and treacherous travel the night before and church services had been canceled. Though winter’s fury raged outside, my house was warm and my family happy. We had spent the day relaxing and enjoying each other’s company while nature blew ragged icy gusts outside. I had just returned from an unexpected trip to California where they had temperatures in the 80?s. Jet lagged and … [Read more...] about Reflections on Martyrdom (by Nick Horton)

The God Question: Definitions and Sharing the Burden of Proof (by Mike Keas)

February 18, 2015 by Guest Blogger

This post was originally published on "The Christian Post" on September 7, 2013. Mike Keas, Ph.D, is Senior Fellow of Discovery Institute (http://www.discovery.org/csc), Professor of History & Philosophy of Science (College at Southwestern http://college.swbts.edu), & teaches at Biola (http://www.biola.edu/scienceandreligion) In a comment on my last blog Hraefn refers to this statement from me: "God, if he exists, is the ultimate uncaused cause (self-existent being).” Hraefn responds (emphasis mine): Why must the creator of the universe, if such exists, be uncaused? By … [Read more...] about The God Question: Definitions and Sharing the Burden of Proof (by Mike Keas)

CB Scott Has Been Reinstated at Brewton-Parker *Update/Disposition of Funds Plan

February 18, 2015 by Dave Miller

NOTE: Please see the addendum at the bottom about our plan for the "Help CB and Karen Scott" Fund.  Rumors began to circulate yesterday that CB Scott had been reinstated at Brewton-Parker College. I have verified that the Interim President, Dr. Charlie Bass, has reinstated Dr. Scott to his position as Vice President of Alumni, Advancement, and Church Relations. Let me say two personal words here. First, I couldn't be happier for my friend, CB. He was an inspiration to me during this time. He acted with courage and integrity and stood strong when others around him did not. I was … [Read more...] about CB Scott Has Been Reinstated at Brewton-Parker *Update/Disposition of Funds Plan

The Politically Incorrect Truth ISIS Teaches Us About Islam

February 17, 2015 by Jared Wellman

In a recent contribution in The Atlantic, Graeme Wood published a piece entitled, “What ISIS Really Wants.” It’s an enriching read, offering a crystalline examination of ISIS. Personally, it wasn’t until I read this particular piece that I truly understood the difference between ISIS and other Islamic terroristic organizations, like Al-Qaeda or Hamas. Before today I lumped such groups into the same radicalistic category, but Wood helped me see that this is like comparing poisonous apples to explosive-laced oranges. Both are dangerous, but one is objectively more terrible. (It’s the … [Read more...] about The Politically Incorrect Truth ISIS Teaches Us About Islam

That’s What Gospel Do

February 17, 2015 by Mike Leake

You might not catch that title….but I’m banking on the fact that since it has the word “gospel” in it, and that’s a buzzword, you’ve clicked here anyways. Allow me to explain the title before I show you something in Scripture that I’m confident will prod your heart to worship. A couple of years ago Jarrod Dyson, the speedy centerfielder for the KC Royals, scored the game winning run by tagging up on a pop up to the shortstop. If you don’t understand baseball just know that in order to do something like this you have to be crazy fast. Dyson is crazy fast. When being interviewed after … [Read more...] about That’s What Gospel Do

Confessions of a Discouraged Pastor (Anonymous)

February 16, 2015 by Guest Blogger

(We generally don't publish anonymous articles, but this one seemed a reasonable exception) There are two things I dread every Sunday. First, I dread reading the tweets and Facebook posts of my pastor friends who are “stoked” and “pumped” as they anticipate gathering with the greatest people God ever saved to worship in the greatest churches God every established to hug and celebrate and rejoice and experience a little heaven on earth. Second, I dread going to my church. That’s bad. I’m the pastor. As the week wears on and Sunday rolls around again, I get this nagging sense of dread in … [Read more...] about Confessions of a Discouraged Pastor (Anonymous)

Same-Sex Secession?

February 14, 2015 by Bart Barber

I do not favor secession and civil war over the issue of same-sex marriage. If that makes me a left-wing, progressive, liberal, pinko, Commie sell-out in your eyes, then so be it. Since I do not favor secession and civil war over the issue of same-sex marriage, once the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled to mandate legalization of same-sex marriage in every state (and that's coming soon), I believe that every state should come into compliance with the dictates of the Court. Judge Roy Moore and all the other judges in Alabama must do precisely that—must abide by whatever decision … [Read more...] about Same-Sex Secession?

Woman Wins $188 Million in the Lottery: Plans to Tithe – What Do You (and Your Church) Do?

February 13, 2015 by Dave Miller

We may have had this discussion before, I don't remember. But Marie Holmes, a mother of 4 children (one of which has cerebral palsy) has won the lottery. Her share is $188 million dollars. You can read the full story here, and there is interesting video. I don't play the lottery and am not a supporter of the it. Marie seems like a solid, grounded woman. I hope she follows through on her plans to set up college funds for her children and make other wise choices. Frankly, many people who win the lottery make foolish choices and cause themselves more pain than the money could ever … [Read more...] about Woman Wins $188 Million in the Lottery: Plans to Tithe – What Do You (and Your Church) Do?

Help Us Help CB and Karen Scott *Update/Distribution of Funds

February 12, 2015 by Dave Miller

Addendum: As announced in a post on 2/18, CB has been fully reinstated at Brewton Parker without loss of pay or benefits. We are rejoicing at this blessing. Because we love and respect CB and Karen, and not knowing that this reinstatement would happen, we set up a fund to help him with living expenses and to help with ongoing health insurance costs. As it stands, he is going to receive his pay and his insurance will continue uninterrupted. This is unexpected. So, we have $2475 in graciously and generously donated funds for a cause that seems to have evaporated! I talked to CB this … [Read more...] about Help Us Help CB and Karen Scott *Update/Distribution of Funds

Southern Baptists Have a History Problem: Let’s Stop Saying We Started Over Missions

February 12, 2015 by Alan Cross

"The Southern Baptist Convention was begun over missions!" "Delegates gathered in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia to organize around missions!" I have heard this my whole life. You have too. It is a partial truth that continues to be uttered over and over again, usually by seminary leaders seeking to rally more Cooperative Program giving. It is something that we need to stop saying. We all know that it isn't really true. Not really - not in the way it sounds. Yes, missions was technically the reason that the SBC was started. But, it was over a conflict with the Triennial Convention who … [Read more...] about Southern Baptists Have a History Problem: Let’s Stop Saying We Started Over Missions
