(Editor's Note: Si Cochran is a 2007 graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and currently serves as the youth pastor of Southern Hills Baptist Church in Sioux City, IA. That would make him my youth pastor! Si blogs at "Holiness, Justice and Grace.") As the old Italian proverb goes, “Translation is treason.” The treasonous nature of all translation work consists in the inability to accurately convey the nuance of meaning when moving from the original text to the receptor language. While the translator may be able to convey the bulk of meaning found within a text, he will … [Read more...] about NIV 2011: Yesterday’s NIV is now Today’s NIV: A Transformation of a Translation Reflecting Today’s Culture
Calvinists Go To McDonald’s, Arminians Go To Burger King
(Editor's Note: I saw this post at Anthony Russo's blog, "Throw Away Everything", and thought it was something the readers of SBC Voices might enjoy. Things can get pretty heavy here and a little levity can relieve the tension. Enjoy the post. Check out Anthony's blog. It is well worth reading or putting in your feed.) I was dining at the Golden Arches yesterday with the lovely Mrs. when it occurred to me that right before my eyes was a theology lesson on a brown plastic tray.“Honey,” I began, “John Calvin would eat here.” “What?” she said, fully aware that I had been … [Read more...] about Calvinists Go To McDonald’s, Arminians Go To Burger King
RESOLVED: THE CASE FOR RESOLUTIONS By Nathan Finn
I appreciate Dave Miller giving me the opportunity to weigh in on this topic for SBC Voices. This post is intended as a response to Dave’s interesting post “Be It Resolved: Resolutions Are a Waste of Time! Or Are they?” Dave concludes: At the current time, here’s my stance. I see a little value in the resolution process, but not much. It is prone to silliness and to being co-opted by issue-obsessed individuals who waste all our time while they ride their hobby-horses. I guess at this point I do not see the benefits outweighing the risks. Though I’m sympathetic to some of his concerns, I … [Read more...] about RESOLVED: THE CASE FOR RESOLUTIONS By Nathan Finn
Via Denny Burk – Review of “Who’s Tampering with the Trinity?”
Denny Burk put up links today to an important review that appeared in the Journal of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (JBMW) . Millard Erickson has written an important new book called "Who's Tampering with the Trinity? An Assessment of the Subordination Debate" which deals with the issues in the nature of the Trinity that form the theological basis of disputes about gender and gender roles today. Erickson abandons the current Egalitarian/Eternal Subordination nomenclature and replaces it with "Equivalence" and 'Gradation" - terms I think have some usefulness. Burk links to a review in … [Read more...] about Via Denny Burk – Review of “Who’s Tampering with the Trinity?”
Be It Resolved: Resolutions Are a Waste of Time! Or Are they?
In our discussion of state convention meetings, we devoted quite a bit of time to the South Carolina resolution of copper theft. While some explained the context and import of that resolution, it is fair to say that many of us saw this as another in a long line of vapid resolutions at state conventions and the SBC annual meeting. Toward the end 0f the discussion, Dr. Nathan Finn responded to a series of comments related to a post he made at "Between the Times" and some subsequent events. After addressing Aaron Weaver, he asked this question to me, and to all of us in the discussion. Why … [Read more...] about Be It Resolved: Resolutions Are a Waste of Time! Or Are they?
Preaching the Birth of Christ: Tell Us Your Plan
Tell us about your preaching program during the Christmas season. I spent 14 Christmases at Northbrook Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. It was not easy to come up with fresh, biblical approaches to the Christmas story. How many sermons can you do on the angels on the hillside or the Manger in Bethlehem? So, I'm interested. How do you approach your pulpit duties in the Christmas season? Any creative approaches to the Nativity story you'd be willing to share with the rest of us? I know some preachers who almost completely ignore the season from the pulpit and simply continue with … [Read more...] about Preaching the Birth of Christ: Tell Us Your Plan

Giving Thanks – by Alberta Fisher
(Editor's Note: Thank you, Alberta, for sharing this with us. Alberta's blog is "A Pastor's Wife's Journey" and here website is "So You're the Minister's Wife.") Thanksgiving is the act of giving thanks to a person or to God. It should be a genuine expression and acknowledgement of what has been done for us. Ephesians 5:20 admonishes us: “Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father.” There are so many things to be thankful for. First of all, we should give thanks to God for the new life we have in Him because He gave us the gift … [Read more...] about Giving Thanks – by Alberta Fisher
The Courage it Takes to Go Home
By Thom Hunter Did you leave things un-opened in dusty old attics way back down the road somewhere In boxes you sealed and callously labeled "open only if you really dare?" Did your words slip away, unspoken and wasted, and your thoughts vanish into the air When you turned on the car and drove away crying, thinking no one still there would care? Go home. Throw open the attic of yesterday and re-fill with the hope of tomorrow Re-label the box and tear off the seals that for too long have held hidden sorrow. Let flow words of peace, re-claim thoughts of love, cover each memory with … [Read more...] about The Courage it Takes to Go Home
