I blame my parents, really, for all my troubles. Mom had hearing so perfect she could hear paint dry. Dad couldn't hear a low-yield nuclear weapon. My sister took after Mom, and I - naturally - followed in my father's ever-silencing footsteps. A huge schnoz, blue eyes, and hearing loss are my primary paternal genetic hand-me-downs. Our mutual hearing loss was slowly progressive, making communication slightly harder as the years rolled by. No big deal for me, really; I can't recall a time when Mom didn't tell people that I had "a little trouble hearing." As little boys are wont to … [Read more...] about Too Much of a Good Thing

Have You Misplaced Your Mind?
It’s been a busy few weeks for me. I have one last final exam at my current school before moving to Louisville, KY in a few weeks to transfer to Southern (Baptist Theological Seminary). I’ve been wheeling-and-dealing on Craigslist like Donald Trump with better hair, placing ads selling furniture, motorcycle gear, and other stuff we’re not taking with us. I’ve also been evaluating moving company estimates, which are a fascinating studying in reducing everything you hold dear to total weight and cubic footage. Right now my life’s possessions are as precious as 3,500lbs in 650cu.ft., and some … [Read more...] about Have You Misplaced Your Mind?
“I don’t see how a Christian could vote for…”
Large majorities of various Christian sub-groups (classify by race, by region, and other means) vote either Republican or Democratic. While I understand the presence of an escape hatch to the statement ("I don't see"), can a pastor effectively minister to a congregation that has mixed political constituencies? I don't see how. Could some of the brain trust persuade me otherwise. I can see a categorical personal statement, e.g. "I will not vote for any party that supports abortion" or similar. One day, it cannot come too soon, we will be post COVID-19. One day we will be post-Trump. … [Read more...] about “I don’t see how a Christian could vote for…”
An Open Letter to Dr. Al Mohler and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Board of Trustees Regarding Honoring the Founding Slaveholders
Dear Dr. Mohler and Board of Trustees, Greetings in the Name of our Triune God, “in whom we live, move and have our very being” (Acts 17:28). The impact you have made on the SBC and the nation will be felt for generations to come (Psalm 145:4). The purpose of this correspondence is to humbly and respectfully request that the President and Board of Trustees at SBTS remove from SBTS campus, any memorabilia of the founders: James Pettigru Boyce, John Broadus, Basil Manly, and William Williams. Why? The founders should be acknowledged and appreciated for their role in the establishment … [Read more...] about An Open Letter to Dr. Al Mohler and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Board of Trustees Regarding Honoring the Founding Slaveholders
Open Letter to R. Albert Mohler, President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Rev. Joel A. Bowman, Sr.)
Search committee fundamentals, tawdry messes, and the bovine vote
Eleven day ago two former SBC presidents, megapastors both, and another prominent SBC pastor wrote the Search Committee for the SBC Executive Committee and asked if minority candidates were interviewed for the open position and if not, why not. The letter was leaked to one of the Baptist state papers. The SC issued a statement yesterday that while the question of a minority interview was not answered, attempted to reassure Southern Baptists of the Committee's committment to "ethnic diversity" in their work. Nothing happened in the ten days between except that conversation ripped and roared … [Read more...] about Search committee fundamentals, tawdry messes, and the bovine vote
Miscellaneous Tidbits from this Week
I'm trying to write at least one post per week. I know it's not required, but it's a habit I want to cultivate, and I'm appreciative of the group here at voices for allowing me to post some of my miscellaneous ramblings. I started writing this post earlier this week and was finding myself bereft of material. It was a slow week, but as good 'ol JR would say when a wrestler would interrupt the match of his pay-per-view opponent, "business has picked up." James McDonald has taken an indefinite leave of absence. You can find more particulars here. This is the third pastor, in recent … [Read more...] about Miscellaneous Tidbits from this Week
The March for Life: Some Brief Reflections
My article yesterday gave some brief reflections on the Evangelicals for Life Conference that took place last week in Washington, DC. As is true each year, the conference was held on the days surrounding the annual March for Life. The schedule is cleared during the afternoon on the Friday of the March, and conference participants are encouraged to participate in the March. I enjoyed my first March for Life and hope to be able to participate again in the future. Below are a few brief reflections. 1. I was impressed by the size of the crowd. This was my first March for Life, so I didn't … [Read more...] about The March for Life: Some Brief Reflections
And So We Pray: Answering the Anger over Christians’ “Thoughts and Prayers”
The hostility toward Christianity is reaching a boiling point in some circles of our society. Evidently, a large segment of our society is offended and angered by the fact that we pray for one another when tragedy strikes. California representative Ted Lieu walked out of Congress' moment of silence that was honoring the victims of the massacre at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs - a stunt to get attention to promote gun control legislation. When Paul Ryan tweeted a relatively benign blessing it set off a Twitter firestorm. The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers … [Read more...] about And So We Pray: Answering the Anger over Christians’ “Thoughts and Prayers”
The Coming Crisis: Why We Should Speak/Advocate on Behalf of Immigrant “Dreamers” Right Now
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” - Proverbs 31:8-9 My young immigrant friend keeps calling me. He knows that I work with churches and groups on immigrant/refugee ministry and that I keep up with what is happening from a policy perspective. So, he keeps calling and texting. He was brought here illegally when he was 2 years old. He’s now in his late 20’s and has lived in America all of his life. He is married and has children, all of whom are U.S. citizens. He … [Read more...] about The Coming Crisis: Why We Should Speak/Advocate on Behalf of Immigrant “Dreamers” Right Now
